WHAT ARE HOT AND COLD AISLES

Hot and cold aisles are a specific type of server rack configuration that aim to control the temperature in data centers. Server racks are arranged in aisles with the front sides facing each other. Because most servers’ heat is expelled from the back of the machine, the heat is confined to every other aisle. Vents extract the hot air to avoid overheating. The opposite aisles push cool air through the floor to the front sides of the server racks. This combination of heat extraction and cooling in alternating aisles manages the temperature of the servers to create a more stable environment.

USE CASES

Hot and cold aisles have been implemented in data centers around the world and are effective in managing heat levels. Typically, this configuration is preferable for smaller density installations to allow for greater precision. Precision and cooling ability can be increased depending on the level of perforation in the server doors, as well as through the use of specific server rack accessories.
